posted by Scott Beale on Thursday, November 20th, 2008

YARPP

We’ve recently started using the WordPress plugin Yet Another Related Posts Plugin (YARPP) by mitcho to show possibly related posts on Laughing Squid blog. It works much better than most of the other related posts plugins we’ve used in the past. You can disallow by category and tag, limit by match threshold using matching scores and it can also add related posts to your RSS feed.

Photojojo’s Urban Ruins Photo Safari on Treasure Island

Photojojo Photo Safari - Urban Ruins of Treasure Island

This Saturday, November 22nd, fellow guest blogger Todd Lappin of Telstar Logistics, will be leading a free, public walking photo tour on Treasure Island that is being organized by the website Photojojo.

A man-made island originally built to host a 1939 World’s Fair, Treasure Island was once home to fantastic (but ephemeral) architecture, gala displays, and the (in)famous Gayway — a bawdy playland for World’s Fair visitors. Treasure Island was also intended to serve as an airport. With the outbreak of World War II, the US Navy took over the island, and it remained in Navy hands until the base was closed in 1994. Elements of all this history survive to this day, but Treasure Island’s abandoned state also makes the island feel spooky — like a post-Apocalyptic ghost town floating in the middle of San Francisco Bay.

After this photo safari, we’ll meet up at a bar back in the city to share photos, have a few drinks and give away prizes.

If you’re interested in this weekend’s photo safari, more information is available on the Facebook or Upcoming event pages.

For those who missed us last time, we’ve also put together a short video of the event.

Bill O’Reilly Defames San Francisco With Scare Tactics Video

posted by Scott Beale on Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Huffington Post is reporting on a San Francisco scare tactics video aired by Bill O’Reilly, yes the same asshat who wouldn’t mind if Al Qaeda attacked San Francisco.

Bill O’Reilly is scared. As a daring crusader on the side of “traditional America” in the war against “secular progressives,” O’Reilly fears that the “far left” will push President-elect Obama to embrace their values. As an example of the horrors that would befall us if this were to happen, O’Reilly offers up a surreal pseudo-documentary of San Francisco. O’Reilly sends producer Jesse Waters, whose sole journalistic value seems to be his utter lack of shame at chasing after and ambushing anyone O’Reilly points his finger at, to San Francisco because it represents ‘far left government’ at work.

To get a better idea of what Santarchy is all about, here’s my 40 minute documentary on the 1996 Santacon in Portland “You’d Better Watch Out: Portland Santacon ‘96″.

posted by Scott Beale on Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Kvetch!

After a 6 year hiatus, Derek Powazek has re-launched his website Kvetch!, which now allows people to post their grips and complaints anonymously via Twitter.

You know all those things you wish you could post to Twitter but don’t want to say with your name on them? Those brilliant angry complaints that would feel so good to get off your chest? Now you can.

Kvetch is an anonymous oracle of complaint. Kvetches are displayed randomly and anonymously. There are no permalinks and no search mechanism. Just enjoy the moment.

Real World Guitar Hero Riding A Bicycle

posted by Scott Beale on Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Kevin of Ft. Wayne recreated a level of Guitar Hero riding his bicycle through the neighborhood. The song is “Prisoner of Society” by The Living End with the difficulty level set to “hard”. Of course it’s possible that this is a viral video produced to promote Guitar Hero, but nonetheless it’s very creative.

UPDATE: GameCyte has confirmed that this is in fact a viral video created by the ad agency Droga5 to promote Guitar Hero World Tour.

Exploring the Tenderloin National Forest

posted by Dave Schumaker on Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

guest post by Dave Schumaker

Tenderloin National Forest

Tenderloin National Forest

Tenderloin National Forest

The Tenderloin District in San Francisco is one of the city’s most diverse, yet grimiest neighborhoods. However, there are still some special jewels to be found deep within the Tenderloin. One of them is located at Cohen Alley - The Tenderloin National Forest.

The Tenderloin National Forest began as an idea by Darryl Smith, the founder of The Luggage Store Gallery, in 1989 and work transforming the alley started in 2005.

Now, the alley way is home to a small garden, beautiful murals and is protected by a gate.

The Tenderloin National Forest is open to visitors if the gate is open (nearly every time I’ve walked by, it’s been closed). However, it is open to the public from Noon to 5pm on the 15th of every month.

The San Francisco Chronicle recently had an article about the alley as well.

More photos from the Tenderloin National Forest can be found in this set of photos I posted on flickr.

Tweetsville, A Straightforward iPhone App For Twitter

posted by Scott Beale on Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

I’m always on the hunt for the perfect iPhone app for Twitter and lately I’ve been using Tweetsville. I love how it shows up to 200 updates in the timeline. It also includes separate sections for Twitter search and Twitter trends, plus an option to show full names, which is great since I don’t always remember people’s screen names.

Tweetsville creator Ed Voas talks about how it was developed.
